Whilst often overlooked these properties are where the best prospects for owning a little piece of historical Shanghai lie. Consisting of turn of the century low to medium rise apartment buildings, these apartments maintain many of their original European inspired features, such as beautiful facades, winding marble staircases, large multi-paned windows, wood floors and high ceilings. Conveniently located within the Former French Concession of downtown, most overlook surrounding gardens and some even open up onto their own private garden areas or large, functional balconies. Many are currently tenanted by one owner or a group of relatives, and this makes the process of signing documentation much easier than other old properties with their multiple ownership complications.
Although largely unrenovated, this fact enables purchases to either restore them to their original grandeur or add their own touch to the place. Prices start at around RMB9000-11000 per sqm plus the cost of renovations.
