Pudong Area

By Madeleine on April 29, 2006

Since China launches its reform and opening-up to the outside policy, the Pudong new area has dramatically developed with great changes. Every year, it absorbs and utilizes countless foreign funds which makes it the first choice of Chinese investment destinations. The Pudong new area lies at the mid-point of China’s coastline where the Changjiang River empties into the sea. Adjacent to the prosperous downtown area of Shanghai, backed by the rich and populous Changjiang Delta and located facing the Pacific and Southeast Asian developed countries and regions, it enjoys a unique geographic advantage. The Pudong New Area covers an area of 522 square kilometers and has a population of 1.56 million.
The overall planning is aimed at turning Pudong undeveloped, but potential, into a modernized new area with a sound development structure, advanced integrated transportation network, improved municipal infrastructure, convenient and fast communication and information systems, and a fairly good ecological environment within thirty or forty years.
After the further completion of the modern urban transportation system, a great number of new projects are well under way or have been finished. The capital construction has been accelerated and the environment has been continuously improved. The world has turned their eyes on Shanghai not only for the unique charm of the east great metropolis with its prosperity and culture but also for the attractiveness of the Pudong new area. The construction of key development zones has been progressing in an all-round way. Functional development in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone, Jinqiao Export Processing Zone, Waigaoqiao Bonded Zone and Zhangjiang High-Tech Park has all been seen considerable progress over past decades.
Although the rapid development of Pudong area has slowed down in past 2 years, we must realize that it’s the positive result of national macro-control and the purpose of preventing the overheated investment.
Pudong is and will be the pearl of Chinese investment environment, an important symbol of China’s reform and opening up to the outside world. As a Shanghainese, we are sure to see that Pudong will have even brighter prospects in near future.
